Tess is a Fine Arts major in her junior year at the Columbus College of Art and Design. In her studies, she has progressed into abstract art in large scale form to express her attachment to the American West and the nostalgia that comes with it.
These pieces are from a series of work titled "Longing for the West". It reflects on nostalgia of living in western America with a focus on memories that over time become rose tinted bits of imagery. The pieces use mixed media; leather, paint and brass to replicate an abstract expression of desert landscape. Plaster was spread by hand over plywood to create a rocky texture as well as to have the artist's hands directly connected to the work.
Abstraction allows the memories of the artist to be viewed in a way that is tangible without being directly representational of a specific moment, but rather a collection of scraps that blur together.
Her work has appeared at the Acock Gallery, the DSB Gallery and the Sean Christopher Gallery.
You can see her amazing work on her website. https://tesschatfieldart.wixsite.com/tesschatfieldart
